Friday 27th June – Excursion Day

Today was the first of two excursion days this session, where our campers ventured out across the Alps to take in the sights and culture of the best the region has to offer.

The Discovery campers embarked on a thrilling excursion to the Marécottes Zoo, nestled high in the Swiss Alps. Surrounded by breathtaking mountain views, they marveled at native alpine animals like lynxes, marmots, and ibexes, learning about their habitats and behaviors in an up-close and natural setting. After a picnic lunch, the group continued their journey to the mysterious Grotte aux Fées, a magical limestone cave filled with fascinating rock formations and an underground waterfall. Guided by lantern light through narrow passages and echoing chambers, the campers were captivated by the cave’s natural beauty and legends. The day was filled with wonder, discovery, and unforgettable alpine charm.

A small group of our Explorers and Adventurers chose to spend the day on an exciting excursion to the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, where they explored the rich history of the Olympic Games through interactive exhibits, inspiring stories, and hands-on activities. They learned about legendary athletes and even tried out some virtual sports simulations. Afterward, the group traveled to the picturesque lakeside town of Montreux, where they spent the afternoon shopping for souvenirs, tasting local treats, and strolling along the beautiful flower-lined promenade. The day was a perfect mix of education, exploration, and fun—one they’ll never forget.

Most of the campers in the Explorer, Adventurer, and Pioneer groups set off on an exciting excursion over the border to Chamonix, nestled in the heart of the French Alps. Before heading to France, the campers enjoyed a relaxing and scenic funicular and train ride to visit the Emosson Dam. It was a chance to learn about the renewable energy source that supplies energy across the region and to see the emerald-green lake formed by one of Switzerland’s most impressive dams. Once their morning trip to the dam was complete, they descended back down into the valley to continue their journey into Chamonix. Bursting with energy and curiosity, the campers explored the charming mountain town, taking in breathtaking views of Mont Blanc. They had the chance to learn about the region’s glaciers and unique mountain culture whilst indulging in local treats like crêpes. The day was filled with adventure and wonder—an unforgettable highlight of their camp experience.

Once everyone was back at camp, we spent the evening enjoying some relaxing activities after the long day out. The Discovery group had some competitive yet friendly games of pool, table tennis, and table football at camp. The Explorer group was challenged to a design and build task, where they were asked to create and showcase a model water slide to test their creative and entrepreneurial skills. Our Adventurers enjoyed the sunset over the town while taking on the local mini golf course, aiming for that ever-elusive hole-in-one. Finally, the Pioneers put their general knowledge to the test in a fun and informative pop quiz night, created and hosted by our fabulous staff.

This concluded our day at Les Elfes as we look forward to tomorrow, when we celebrate our International Day—showcasing a diverse range of cultures, knowledge, and food—before our colourful Holi festival.
